Three numbers belie a history spanning more than five decades, i.e. 911. The 911 is undeniably Porsche’s flagship model, and has been the centrepiece of the marque’s unmatched success in motorsport, totalling more than 30,000 victories.
It was a Porsche 911 that boasts an outright win in the gruelling 24 heures du Mans in 1979, even against the prototype entries, in what is considered by many as one of the most challenging competitions on the planet.
The rear mounted engine, one of the 911’s most distinctive and enduring features, has been reinterpreted over the course of time, but never lost, and provides the car’s unique dynamic behaviour. The air cooled engine, another notable feature by which Porsche was acknowledged, was an integral presence of every 911 produced up until 1997 when the fabled engine had to be replaced with a water cooled version.
Initially developed for race track use, the 911 Turbo was born in 1975, and became the long term stable mate of the naturally aspirated 911 Carrera, and despite the 911 Turbo initially gaining a reputation as being unwieldy in less than ideal road conditions it is continued in production as the more powerful 911 variant to this day.
